Tonight in New York: New York Guitar Festival presents The Apollo Project @ World Financial Center’s Winter Garden
This weekend, Brian Eno is the focus of two tribute concerts taking place in NYC. First, on Friday, The Apollo Project takes place at the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden. The free performance, organized by the New York Guitar Festival, will feature a diverse array of performers reinterpreting Eno’s 1982 ode to space exploration, Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. The musicians tapped for The Apollo Project include legendary sideman Larry Campbell, Brooklyn guitar experimentalist Noveller, and Phish bassist Mike Gordon among others. As Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks was originally conceived to sonically frame Al Reinhardt’s documentary, For All Mankind, Friday’s performance will be accompanied by footage of the still-in-production documentary by director Craig Teper, Man In The Right Seat. More information can be found here. Then on Sunday, January 8th at Joe’s Pub, a group of notable NYC musicians including Living Color guitarist and downtown fixture Vernon Reid, and Dismemberment Plan’s Travis Morrison will perform Eno’s debut solo album, Here Come the Warm Jets, in its entirety. A decidedly more earthbound affair then Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, Here Come the Warm Jets was recorded after his departure from Roxy Music and released in 1974. Boasting contributions from a veritable “who’s who” of progressive rock luminaries such as King Crimson’s Robert Fripp and John Wetton, and Hawkwind’s Simon King, Here Come The Warm Jets displayed Eno’s strength as a songwriter and unconventional arranger.
